You don’t have to be a swimmer

.Firstly it is very refreshing on a hot day and secondly you can do things in water that you could never do on land. It’s an amazing work out environment. You don’t have to be a senior citizen or injured to get a great workout in water.

Get in the pool and give it a try! It’s the ideal work out for strengthening and toning muscles, fitness, melting down annoying fat and having fun.

I know it means getting your gear off but once you slip in the water everyone looks the same. The good news is you can even keep your hair dry and you don’t have to be able to swim or be in top shape to do aquafit. All you have to do is move your arms and legs to get fit and in great shape.

Variety is the spice of an active life. If you are getting a bit bored on land and only working certain body parts and the rest just hang around it’s time to hit the water and use your whole body. I used to look at people doing aquafit and thought it was for woosies. I couldn’t see what was happening under the water.

Swimming laps although very good for you can feel a little monotonous sometimes and you have to like swimming. I took the plunge and tried an aquafit class when I was pregnant and couldn’t do my usual high impact gym work outs and to my surprise, I loved it and was hooked! The music was great, the instructor kept everybody challenged and the hour flew by because I was really having fun and working hard without any impact on my joints or my baby belly.

1. It’s not just for Grandma

I wasn’t sure aquafit would be enough of a challenge for me. But ten minutes into my first class, I was convinced. I loved it so much I spent 7 amazing summers in the Wagin pool (after having my baby) 5 days a week at 6am, as an aqua instructor taking a dedicated bunch of girls through their paces. Rain, hail or shine they were there. It was one of the fittest times of my life and I still miss it.

2. Made-to-measure fitness

Your instructor will offer plenty of modifications to increase or decrease the difficulty of the moves, and you’re always free to go at your own pace. Using a flotation belt will help you stay afloat, or you can use a noodle. You don’t even have to go out of your depth to get a good work out.

Unlike traditional group classes such as aerobics or dance, aquafit is non-competitive. No one can tell if you mess up a move when you’re in the water and you don’t have to worry that anyone’s judging you. Most people find that they can stay more focused on the movements when they aren’t worrying about keeping up with everyone else.

Stripping down to your bathing suit can be a daunting prospect, but a challenging aquafit workout is a great reminder that your body is instrumental, not just ornamental and if you work out regularly you will look and feel better and better every day in your swimming togs.

As more and more people discover the benefits of working out in water, pools and community centres are offering an ever-increasing variety of classes, from water running to aqua yoga or aqua tai chi. Shallow water classes are a great option for people who aren’t strong swimmers or may be afraid of the water, while mothers-to-be and new moms can take advantage of pre-and post-natal classes that help them stay active even with baby in tow.

Aquafit helps you balance out muscle groups that may have become uneven through repetitive actions of other workouts. Working out in water provides equal resistance through your full range of motion, a phenomenon known as double concentric muscle action. Aqua expert Kopansky explains it using the basic exercise of kicking your legs from below the knee: “When straightening the leg, the quads are shortening while expending energy and facilitating the extension at the knee. The lower leg is pushing against the water, lifting the load. Then the hamstrings shorten while expending energy to bring the heel towards the gluteals while the calf area is pushing the water back and up. This results in balanced muscle action around the knee.”

It’s not just your heart, lungs and muscles that stand to benefit from an aquafit class. Working out in water is also fantastic for your internal organs and lymphatic system. “Hydrostatic pressure, turbulence and buoyancy assist in venous return [the flow of blood back to the heart] and lymphatic drainage,” says Kopansky. These extra benefits help explain why you can feel so good after a class—the body is refreshed, cleansed and lighter rather than all sweaty and exhausted.
